Charleston Hurricane Season Prep: Don’t Forget About Your Main Utility Shutoffs

When hurricane season rolls around, most of us double-check our emergency kits, make sure we’ve got plenty of water and batteries, and look up our evacuation zones. Now those are all very important, but one thing many homeowners forget to do? Locate and shut off utilities. Today we are going to share reasons why shutting off your main utilities is an important step in hurricane preparedness.

Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Valve Is

If high winds or flooding damage your plumbing, you could end up with a broken pipe or major leak even after the storm has passed in some cases. That’s why knowing how to shut off your home’s water supply is so important.

Where can you find your main shutoffs?

   - Near the water heater

   - Where the water line enters your home

   - Inside a ground-level utility box near the curb

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider replacing it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Find Your Gas Shutoff Valve

Storm damage can also lead to dangerous gas leaks. Strong winds or flooding may loosen gas connections without you realizing it. If you don’t already know where your gas shutoff is located, now’s the time to find it. Start by looking for your gas meter on the outside of your home or along your property line. Keep a gas shutoff wrench or tool nearby, and learn how to use it before you need it.

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider calling your local plumbers, and replace it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Locate Your Sewer Cleanout Cap

Here’s one many people overlook: the sewer cleanout cap. It’s a capped pipe that sticks out of the ground, usually white or black, and can often be found near your foundation, in a garden bed, or along the property line. During a hurricane, heavy rainfall and flooding can overwhelm sewer lines. That can cause backups into your home’s drains, toilets, and tubs.

Pro Tip: If water starts backing up, knowing where your cleanout is located allows a plumber to release the pressure quickly, or block incoming flow if needed.

Evacuating? Take a Few Minutes to Shut It All Down.

   - Main water valve

   - Gas supply

   - Check your sewer cleanout cap

These steps only take a few minutes but could save your home from major damage if utilities fail or lines break while you're away.

Quick Recap

Getting familiar with your home’s water, gas, and sewer systems may not be the first thing you think of when prepping for a storm, but it should be on your list. A little preparation now can help you avoid major problems later.

5 Plumbing Tips for Charleston Homeowners: Stay Ahead of Costly Repairs

Charleston’s charm comes with its own unique set of plumbing quirks and challenges. From historic homes to coastal storms, Lowcountry living means keeping a close eye on your pipes and drainage systems. Whether you're in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, or Downtown Charleston, these plumbing tips can help protect your home and wallet.

1. Check for Leaks After Heavy Rain or Flooding

Charleston is no stranger to downpours, king tides, and flash flooding. After major storms, it’s smart to inspect your home for signs of water damage. Even small leaks can lead to mold or structural issues if left untreated for long enough.

Things to look for:

  • Puddles
  • Dripping Pipes
  • Musty Smells

2. Install a Backwater Valve or Prepare with Backflow Testing

If your home is in a flood-prone area like downtown, a backwater valve is a smart investment. This simple device prevents sewage from backing up and re-entering your home during periods of heavy rain. Dealing with a backup is often messy and expensive and because of the heavy rain common this time of year here in Charleston, these backups are much more common than most homeowners realize. If you already have a backwater valve installed you can request backflow testing to ensure that your systems are prepared.

3. Avoid Using Drain Cleaners/Chemicals

While drain cleaners may seem like a quick fix, they’re often too harsh for the older plumbing systems common in many Charleston homes. These chemicals can corrode pipes over time, especially when they sit in the system. Now these chemicals are used on clogged systems which already have restricted water flow. This combination can lead to bigger and more expensive problems down the road because the chemicals take longer to fully drain.

Pro Tip: If you’re dealing with persistent clogs or frequent backups, call a licensed plumber. Hydro jetting could be a safer and extremely effective solution.

4. Test Your Sump Pump Regularly

Water intrusion is always a risk here in Charleston. If your home has a sump pump (especially in crawl spaces) it’s a good idea to test it before the rainy season fully arrives. Pouring water into the pit to make sure it activates and discharges properly. A failed sump pump during a storm could mean serious water damage.

5. Know Where Your Utility Shutoffs Are

Every Charleston homeowner should know the importance of being able to locate the main water and gas shutoffs. In an emergency like a burst pipe or gas leak, being able to shut off utilities quickly can prevent thousands in damage. If you’re not sure where yours are, ask a professional to show you during your next service call.

Pro Tip: Knowing what and where your cleanout cap is as well can help your home’s systems by relieving pressure and allowing proper drainage in the event of flooding or water backup.
