5 Common Plumbing Problems and How to Spot Them Early

Plumbing problems rarely appear out of nowhere. In most cases, your system gives you warning signs long before an emergency happens (if you know what to look for). At Rooter Man Plumbing, we’ve been helping Charleston homeowners and businesses for over 20 years, and we’ve seen the same issues cause stress time and time again. The good news? By spotting the signs early, you can save money, avoid water damage, and keep your plumbing running smoothly.

Here are five of the most common plumbing problems, and how to recognize them before they become bigger headaches.

1. Slow Drains

A sink, shower, or tub that takes forever to drain isn’t just annoying… It’s usually the first sign of a clog! Hair, grease, food particles, and soap buildup are common culprits. If you notice gurgling sounds or standing water, it’s time to act. Catching a slow drain early may save you from a full blockage that requires emergency service.

2. Leaky Faucets or Toilets

That drip-drip sound might seem minor, but it adds up fast, both in wasted water and higher bills. A leaking toilet can waste hundreds of gallons a day. In some cases, leaks are caused by worn-out washers or flappers, which are inexpensive fixes. If left untreated, though, leaks can damage floors, cabinets, and substructures around the fixture.

3. Low Water Pressure

When your shower feels more like a trickle, it could be a symptom of bigger problems. Low water pressure often points to hidden leaks, pipe corrosion, or sediment buildup inside your plumbing. If multiple fixtures in your home are affected, it’s a sign that you need professional inspection before the issue escalates.

4. Water Heater Trouble

No hot water? Inconsistent temperatures? Strange popping noises? These are all early signs that your water heater needs attention. Sediment buildup inside the tank is a frequent cause of problems and reduces efficiency. Flushing the system and scheduling annual maintenance can extend your unit’s life and prevent costly replacements.

5. Running Toilets or “Ghost Flushing”

If your toilet runs constantly or refills on its own, even when nobody has flushed, you could be dealing with worn-out internal components or a water pressure issue. Not only does this waste water, but it can also point to bigger plumbing inefficiencies. Addressing it early prevents higher bills and protects your system from unnecessary wear.

Why Early Action Matters

The sooner you address these warning signs, the less likely you are to face costly repairs or water damage. Charleston homeowners trust Rooter Man Plumbing for prompt, reliable service, and you can too!

Charleston Fall Plumbing Checklist: Rooter Man's Guide for Lowcountry Homeowners

Next Monday marks the first official day of fall, and while the weather in Charleston may stay warm for a while longer, your plumbing system is already shifting into fall-mode. Taking some simple steps now can help prevent problems later (especially with the busy holiday season right around the corner)

Here is Rooter Man’s top 5 list for how to make sure your plumbing is ready for this fall. We recommend saving this article for once temperatures actually end up dropping, that way you can stay prepared.

1. Protect Outdoor Faucets and Hoses

Cooler nights are coming, and it only takes one sudden cold snap to cause issues. Go ahead and disconnect your garden hoses and check your outdoor faucets when a cold front is forecasted. This quick step can prevent costly issues with your pipes, faucets, and hoses, saving you a headache later in the year.

2. Give Your Water Heater Some Attention

Fall is the perfect time to flush your water heater. Over time, sediment builds up in the tank, making it less efficient. By flushing it now, you’ll have plenty of hot water when temperatures drop and when holiday guests come to town.

Pro-Tip: With heavier strain on heaters during the holidays, scheduling a water heater inspection now can help you avoid scheduling services or repairs during our busiest season.

3. Keep Gutters and Drains Clear

Falling leaves might be pretty, but they’re not friendly to your gutters and outdoor drains. A clogged drain can cause standing water and even foundation problems in extreme cases. Clearing them out before fall rains hit is an easy way to protect your home, and Rooter Man’s professional drain cleaning services are here to help.

4. Schedule a Seasonal Plumbing Checkup

With fall arriving this upcoming Monday, it’s a great reminder to schedule a professional plumbing inspection. Having a plumber check your pipes, sewer lines, and fixtures now means you’ll be ready for the holidays, without the stress of surprise plumbing problems.

Pro-Tip: Rooter Man has been providing high-quality plumbing services to Charleston home and business owners for nearly 20 years.

5. Prep the Kitchen for Fall Cooking

Soups, stews, and holiday cooking are on the way, which also means more stress on your garbage disposal and kitchen sink. Remember: grease, oils, and food scraps should never go down the drain as they are the biggest reasons drains will clog. Scheduling a quick drain cleaning this fall can keep your kitchen running smoothly.

Get Ahead of Fall Plumbing Problems

Preparing your plumbing for fall doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little maintenance now can prevent emergencies, save money, and give you peace of mind as we head into the cooler months. If you’d like help getting your plumbing ready for the season, call Rooter Man Charleston today.

Why More Charleston Homeowners Are Choosing Hydro Jetting for Drain Cleaning

Drain Cleaning in Charleston is a popular topic especially during the summer. With older plumbing systems, frequent storms, and tree root intrusion, clogs can build up fast. Hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways to clear stubborn blockages and keep your drains flowing smoothly. Here's why it’s the go-to solution for homeowners across the Lowcountry.

Timing Is Everything

Summer in Charleston doesn't just bring the heat, it also brings hurricane season. Increased rainfall puts extra pressure on your drainage systems especially with no preventative or previous cleaning. If your pipes are already partially blocked, stormwater has nowhere to go, increasing the risk of backups, flooding, and costly damage.

Why Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, roots, sediment, and buildup inside your pipes. It’s far more effective than snaking and is especially useful in older systems where blockages are common.

Common Signs You May Need Jetting:

- Standing water near outdoor drains

- Frequent kitchen or shower clogs

- Slow-draining sinks or tubs

- Bad odors coming from pipes

Jetting Now Can Save You Later

Exposing your drainage systems to some preventative hydro jetting before the rainy season ramps up can protect your home from water damage, save you money on emergency repairs, and extend the life of your drains. Add in the fact that jetting services don't utilize any chemicals and it's an easy decision to make.

Schedule Your Summer Jetting Service Today

If you live in Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, or the surrounding Lowcountry, now’s the time to make sure your drains are ready. Contact Rooter Man Plumbing today at (843)-402-7799 to schedule a hydro jetting service and keep your home flowing smoothly all summer long.

Charleston Hurricane Season Prep: Don’t Forget About Your Main Utility Shutoffs

When hurricane season rolls around, most of us double-check our emergency kits, make sure we’ve got plenty of water and batteries, and look up our evacuation zones. Now those are all very important, but one thing many homeowners forget to do? Locate and shut off utilities. Today we are going to share reasons why shutting off your main utilities is an important step in hurricane preparedness.

Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Valve Is

If high winds or flooding damage your plumbing, you could end up with a broken pipe or major leak even after the storm has passed in some cases. That’s why knowing how to shut off your home’s water supply is so important.

Where can you find your main shutoffs?

   - Near the water heater

   - Where the water line enters your home

   - Inside a ground-level utility box near the curb

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider replacing it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Find Your Gas Shutoff Valve

Storm damage can also lead to dangerous gas leaks. Strong winds or flooding may loosen gas connections without you realizing it. If you don’t already know where your gas shutoff is located, now’s the time to find it. Start by looking for your gas meter on the outside of your home or along your property line. Keep a gas shutoff wrench or tool nearby, and learn how to use it before you need it.

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider calling your local plumbers, and replace it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Locate Your Sewer Cleanout Cap

Here’s one many people overlook: the sewer cleanout cap. It’s a capped pipe that sticks out of the ground, usually white or black, and can often be found near your foundation, in a garden bed, or along the property line. During a hurricane, heavy rainfall and flooding can overwhelm sewer lines. That can cause backups into your home’s drains, toilets, and tubs.

Pro Tip: If water starts backing up, knowing where your cleanout is located allows a plumber to release the pressure quickly, or block incoming flow if needed.

Evacuating? Take a Few Minutes to Shut It All Down.

   - Main water valve

   - Gas supply

   - Check your sewer cleanout cap

These steps only take a few minutes but could save your home from major damage if utilities fail or lines break while you're away.

Quick Recap

Getting familiar with your home’s water, gas, and sewer systems may not be the first thing you think of when prepping for a storm, but it should be on your list. A little preparation now can help you avoid major problems later.
