Should You Replace Your Fixtures Before the Holiday Season?

As the holidays approach, Charleston homeowners are busy planning dinners, decorating, and getting their homes guest-ready. But one thing many forget to consider is their plumbing fixtures. From outdated faucets to unreliable toilets, small issues can turn into big problems when your home is full of guests.

So, should you replace your fixtures before the holiday season? Here’s what to think about.

The Holidays Put Extra Stress on Your Plumbing

Between hosting family dinners and overnight guests, your plumbing system will be working overtime. Extra cooking, cleaning, and showering can expose weaknesses in old or worn-out fixtures.

A leaky faucet, slow-draining sink, or unreliable toilet may not seem like a big deal now, but during the holidays, it can lead to frustration and unnecessary stress. That’s why it’s smart to schedule a quick plumbing inspection in Charleston

with Rooter Man before the season kicks into full swing.

New Fixtures Offer Better Efficiency

Modern plumbing fixtures are designed with efficiency in mind. Low-flow toilets, touchless faucets, and high-efficiency showerheads can all help reduce water use and utility costs, without sacrificing performance.

If your fixtures are more than 10–15 years old, replacing them before the busy season can save you money and prevent mid-celebration breakdowns.

Style and Function Go Hand in Hand

Your kitchen and bathrooms play a big role in holiday hosting. Upgrading to stylish, modern fixtures not only improves function but also gives your home a refreshed look. Whether it’s a sleek new faucet or a matching set of bathroom fixtures, the right updates can elevate your home’s appearance before guests arrive.

Avoid Holiday Plumbing Emergencies

One of the best reasons to replace fixtures early? Prevention. Old valves, loose handles, or corroded fittings can cause leaks or clogs at the worst possible time. By upgrading now, you can avoid costly repairs and ensure your plumbing runs smoothly all season long.

If you’re unsure whether your fixtures are due for an upgrade, Rooter Man can help. Our licensed Charleston plumbers can inspect your system and recommend affordable, long-lasting options that fit your home’s needs.

DIY Drain Cleaning: What Works and What Doesn’t

Clogged drains are one of the most common household plumbing problems, and they always seem to happen at the worst times. Before you pick up the phone, it’s tempting to try a do-it-yourself solution first, but not every DIY drain cleaning method actually works (and some can even cause more harm than good)

If you’re a Charleston homeowner dealing with a slow or clogged drain, here’s a breakdown of which DIY fixes are worth trying and which ones you should skip.

What DIY Methods Can Work?

1. Hot Water Flush

Sometimes, a simple fix is the most effective. Slowly pouring a kettle of hot water down the drain can help melt grease buildup and clear light blockages. This method is safe and easy, but it won’t solve more serious clogs. Just be sure to avoid using boiling water, as extreme heat can damage PVC pipes commonly found in kitchen and bathroom plumbing.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

The fizzing reaction between baking soda and vinegar can loosen small clogs and freshen up smelly drains. While it’s not a cure-all, this eco-friendly method is a good first step for minor buildup, and a great option if you’re not wanting to schedule out drain cleaning services immediately.

3. Plunger

A good old-fashioned plunger often works wonders on sinks, tubs, and even toilets. Creating a strong seal and pumping can dislodge blockages caused by hair, soap scum, or food particles. For best results, cover any overflow openings with a wet rag to maintain suction.

Pro-Tip: Plungers are most effective on shallow clogs, if the blockage is deeper in the line, you’ll likely need professional drain cleaning services.

4. Drain Snake (Hand Auger)

A hand-crank drain snake can reach deeper into your pipes to grab hair clogs or other debris. It’s one of the most effective DIY tools available and a step up from plunging. This method does require purchasing the handheld snake, but it’s something you can use on future clogs.

What DIY Methods Don’t Work (and often hurt…)

1. Chemical Drain Cleaners

Store-bought liquid drain cleaners may seem like a quick and easy fix, but they often do more harm than good. Harsh chemicals can corrode pipes, damage finishes, and create safety hazards in your home.

2. Wire Hangers

Many people try to bend a wire hanger into a makeshift snake. Unfortunately, this can scratch pipes, push clogs further down, or even get stuck inside your drain. Oftentimes the clog is also deeper than a typical wire hanger can reach.

3. Repeated Quick Fixes

If you’re plunging, snaking, or flushing your drains every few weeks, the problem may be deeper in your plumbing system. DIY methods can provide temporary relief, but recurring clogs are a sign you need professional help.

When to Call a Professional

If your DIY attempts don’t solve the problem, or if multiple drains in your home are running slow, it’s time to call in a professional plumber. At Rooter Man, we use advanced tools like hydro jetting to clear stubborn clogs safely and thoroughly, without damaging your pipes.

Keep Your Drains Clear with Rooter Man Charleston

Should I Repair or Replace My Toilet?

A malfunctioning toilet is one of those household issues that can’t be ignored. Charleston homeowners often ask us whether toilet repairs are better than toilet replacements. The right choice depends on the age of your toilet, the type of problem, and your long-term plans for your home, which is exactly what this article is here to help you decide.

Common Toilet Problems That Can Be Repaired

Many toilet issues are relatively simple to fix and don’t require a full replacement. For example:

Running toilet: Often caused by a faulty flapper or fill valve, both of which are inexpensive parts that can be replaced quickly.

Weak flush:
Sometimes a clog in the trap or vent system is the culprit. A plumber can usually clear this without replacing the toilet.

Leaking around the base: If it’s just the wax ring or bolts that need tightening, repairs are straightforward.

Handle issues: A loose or broken handle can be swapped out in minutes.

Pro-Tip: In these cases, calling a trusted plumber to make the toilet repair is usually the most cost-effective choice.

When It Makes More Sense to Replace the Toilet

On the other hand, some issues signal that replacement may be smarter than repair:

Frequent repairs: If your toilet constantly needs attention, the costs add up and replacement becomes the better investment.

Cracks in the porcelain: Even small cracks can lead to leaks or flooding meaning that replacement is the safest option.

High water bills: Older toilets can use up to 5 gallons per flush, while according to the USEPA modern models use just 1.28 gallons or less. Upgrading can save hundreds of dollars a year.

Outdated design or efficiency: If you’re remodeling or selling your home, consider a new toilet, or an eco-friendly toilet upgrade in Charleston for sustainability and reduced utility costs.

Professional Toilet Installation

Whether you repair or replace, hiring a licensed plumber ensures the job is done correctly. Toilet installation in Charleston requires proper sealing, alignment, and water flow adjustments. Plus, professional installation guarantees your new or repaired toilet works efficiently and avoids leaks or costly mistakes.

The Bottom Line

So, should you repair or replace your toilet? If the issue is minor and your toilet is relatively new, repair is usually the best option. However, if your toilet is older, inefficient, or has structural issues, a replacement will save you money and hassle in the long run. This guide should help you decide between toilet repairs in Charleston or a full toilet replacement, and if you have any questions, or would like to schedule services, Rooter Man Plumbing of Charleston is here to help.

Why More Charleston Homeowners Are Choosing Hydro Jetting for Drain Cleaning

Drain Cleaning in Charleston is a popular topic especially during the summer. With older plumbing systems, frequent storms, and tree root intrusion, clogs can build up fast. Hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways to clear stubborn blockages and keep your drains flowing smoothly. Here's why it’s the go-to solution for homeowners across the Lowcountry.

Timing Is Everything

Summer in Charleston doesn't just bring the heat, it also brings hurricane season. Increased rainfall puts extra pressure on your drainage systems especially with no preventative or previous cleaning. If your pipes are already partially blocked, stormwater has nowhere to go, increasing the risk of backups, flooding, and costly damage.

Why Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, roots, sediment, and buildup inside your pipes. It’s far more effective than snaking and is especially useful in older systems where blockages are common.

Common Signs You May Need Jetting:

- Standing water near outdoor drains

- Frequent kitchen or shower clogs

- Slow-draining sinks or tubs

- Bad odors coming from pipes

Jetting Now Can Save You Later

Exposing your drainage systems to some preventative hydro jetting before the rainy season ramps up can protect your home from water damage, save you money on emergency repairs, and extend the life of your drains. Add in the fact that jetting services don't utilize any chemicals and it's an easy decision to make.

Schedule Your Summer Jetting Service Today

If you live in Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, or the surrounding Lowcountry, now’s the time to make sure your drains are ready. Contact Rooter Man Plumbing today at (843)-402-7799 to schedule a hydro jetting service and keep your home flowing smoothly all summer long.

Is Your Toilet Costing You Money? Here’s How to Tell

Did you know that a hidden water leak in your home can greatly increase your water bill? A small drip from a sink faucet won’t break the bank, but a leaky toilet could without you even knowing. When you combine that knowledge with the fact that toilets are one of the most common sources of household leaks that we see means that these leaks often slip under the radar until they cause damage. If you have a leaky toilet it’s easy to see why early detection matters.

Fortunately, there are some telltale signs that your toilet might need a quick and simple repair. Keep an eye (and ear) out for these symptoms:

  • You have to jiggle the handle to make the toilet stop running

  • The toilet makes noise even when it hasn't been used recently

  • Water is running over the overflow tube inside the tank

  • You need to fully hold down the handle to get it to flush

  • Water trickles into the bowl long after you've flushed

  • You hear the tank refilling on its own (as if it flushed without being used)

  • Your toilet bowl *sweats* or constantly has condensation

If any of these sound familiar, your toilet likely has a leak. The good news is that most toilet leaks are caused by worn or misaligned parts and can be fixed without replacing the entire toilet.

Fix that leak before it drains your wallet (and your patience)

A leaking toilet may seem like a minor inconvenience, but it can waste thousands of gallons of water a year if it’s left alone. That wasted water still shows up on your bill. If you suspect a leak, don’t ignore it and don’t stress trying to fix it yourself.

Call Rooter Man today, and we’ll send a licensed plumbing technician to diagnose the issue and make a quick repair. We’re here to help you save water, money, and hassle.

Plunger 101: How to Pick the Right One and Save Yourself a Service Call

As a plumber serving Charleston and the Lowcountry, I’ve been called out to homes for clogged toilets, slow-draining sinks, and other simple plumbing issues that could have easily been solved with the right plunger.

For homeowners, knowing which plunger to use and when can save you time and money. So, here’s a quick guide on the three most common types of plungers, what they’re best used for, and a few pro tips to keep in mind.

1. Cup Plunger (Sink Plunger)

The classic. It’s a simple rubber cup on a handle, and it's the most common type you’ll find under the kitchen sink. A cup plunger is best for sinks, bathtubs, and showers

Avoid using on:

  • Toilets (the flat rubber cup doesn’t seal well in a toilet’s curved drain)

A cup plunger works best on flat, smooth surfaces. Be sure to submerge the rubber cup in water, as it’s more effective when you’re plunging with water rather than air.

2. Flange Plunger (Toilet Plunger)

This looks a lot like a cup plunger, but it has an additional rubber flap (flange) that folds out from inside the cup. This makes it the ideal tool for toilets. The flange helps create a better seal in the toilet’s curved drain, allowing for better pressure and more effective results.

Pro Tip: If needed, you can use it as a cup plunger in a pinch by folding the flange back in.

3. Accordion Plunger

If you need serious power, this is the one. The accordion plunger has a plastic bellows that provides more pressure with each plunge, making it perfect for stubborn toilet clogs.

Best for:

  • Stubborn toilet clogs

Not ideal for:

  • Sinks or tubs

Tip: If you use this plunger, soften the plastic in warm water first to get a better seal and better results.

How Plungers Work

A plunger uses pressure and suction to dislodge clogs. When you push down, you’re forcing water into the clog. When you pull up, the suction helps break it up. It’s the push-pull motion that clears things up.

Pro Tips

  • Always make sure there’s enough water in the fixture to cover the plunger cup.

  • If you’re using a plunger on a sink, cover the overflow hole with a wet rag to improve suction.

  • Keep a cup plunger for sinks and a flange plunger for toilets.

  • Use a steady, consistent rhythm when plunging — it’s more effective than simply jabbing.

At Rooter-Man SC, we love solving plumbing problems, but our goal is to help you feel confident tackling these smaller issues yourself. With the right plunger and a little knowledge, you can handle a lot of common clogs on your own. If you get stuck, though, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’ve got you covered!

Spring Sprinkler Startup Tip: Check That Backflow Preventer for Leaks

Now that the warm weather is here, it’s time to bring your yard back to life! Many homeowners are getting ready to run their sprinkler systems for the first time this season—but there’s one thing you shouldn’t overlook: your backflow preventer.

We recently worked on a system where the backflow device was leaking steadily. It turns out, the unit wasn’t insulated during the winter, and freezing temperatures had caused internal damage. A small leak like that might seem harmless, but it can actually lead to wasted water, system failure, and even contamination of your home’s clean water supply.

Why Backflow Preventers Matter

Backflow preventers are designed to keep dirty irrigation water from flowing back into your home’s plumbing. If they’re leaking, cracked, or failing, they can’t do their job—and that puts your water at risk.

Common Spring Problems

If your backflow wasn’t drained or insulated during winter, the water inside can freeze and expand. That pressure can crack plastic or metal parts inside the device. When spring arrives and you turn the system back on, you’ll usually see:

  • Dripping or spraying water

  • Strange noises or pressure issues

  • Water pooling around the unit

We Can Help

At Rooter-Man SC, we repair and replace backflow preventers throughout the Charleston area. Whether it’s a quick fix or a full replacement, we’ll make sure your system is safe and running smoothly for the season.

Tip: Always inspect your irrigation components before turning them on in spring!

Is Your Toilet Leaking? What to do When Living in Charleston

Is Your Toilet Leaking? Here’s How to Tell.

You’d be surprised how much water a small leak can waste sometimes enough to raise your water bill by 10-12%. One of the most common spots we find leaks is right at the toilet.

Here are a few simple things to look for that might mean your toilet needs a quick repair:

🚽 Do you have to jiggle the handle to get it to stop running?
🔊 Does it make noise even when no one’s using it?
🌊 Is water running inside the tank?
✋ Do you have to hold the handle down to get a full flush?
💧 See water trickling inside the bowl after a flush?
📈 Does the water randomly turn on and off?

If you answered yes to any of those, there’s a good chance your toilet’s leaking. The good news? It’s usually an easy fix, and taking care of it now can save you from a higher water bill (and a bigger headache) later.

Need help getting it fixed? That’s what we’re here for.

How Much Do Plumbers Charge to Snake a Drain?

It’s one of the most common questions homeowners ask: “How much does it cost to snake a drain?” The honest answer? It depends.

Every home and every clog pricing is different. The cost can vary based on several factors, including:

  • Which drain is clogged? A kitchen sink, bathroom sink, toilet, or main sewer line all require different tools and techniques.

  • Where is the clog located? A simple hair clog near a bathroom trap is much easier (and cheaper) to handle than a deep blockage in a main line.

  • Is there access? Having a cleanout makes the job faster and easier. If there isn’t one, access might require more work (and cost).

  • How accessible is the area? Tight crawlspaces, old plumbing, or complicated layouts can all affect the time and effort required.

The Bottom Line: You Probably Need It Done

If your drain is backed up, you don’t have many options, it needs to be cleared. The good news is that most plumbing companies will give you a quote before doing any work. That way, you know what you're getting into before committing a dime.

At Rooter Man SC, we offer transparent pricing and honest recommendations. Snaking a drain starts around $225 and goes up from there depending on the specifics of your home and the nature of the clog. Any and all additions to the scope of work will be taken into account and reflected on our upfront estimate.

How to Keep the Cost Down

If you’re dealing with a clog that can wait, try to schedule service during regular business hours. Emergency calls, especially at night, on weekends, or holidays, often come with higher rates. Waiting until the morning could save you a significant amount of money.

Also, be sure to check the plumber’s website for any special offers or coupons. Many companies  offer seasonal discounts or first-time customer deals that can help offset the cost.

A Word on Experience and the Nature of the Work

It’s also worth remembering that a seasoned plumber might make the job look easy, but that’s because they’ve put in the time and training to know exactly what to do. That experience saves you time, prevents bigger issues, and ensures the job is done right the first time.

And let’s be honest... drain work almost always involves wastewater. It’s not just about convenience, it’s about sanitation, safety, and proper disposal. That’s part of the value built into the cost: knowing your home and health are in good hands.

Need a drain cleared? Call Rooter Man SC today for a no-obligation estimate. We’ll take a look and give you the information you need to make the right call no pressure, just help.
