Winter Plumbing Issues in Charleston: A Field Report From Local Plumbers

CHARLESTON, SC, UNITED STATES, February 4, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- As winter continues across the Lowcountry, local plumbing professionals are sharing insights into the most common plumbing issues seen during recent cold weather events. Based on field observations from service calls throughout the Charleston area, and winter related plumbing problems that often appear during and after brief temperature drops.

Local Charleston plumbers have reported a range of cold weather issues over the past several weeks. These include water lines that are frozen, pressure fluctuations, outdoor spigot and hose damage, performance issues with outdoor tankless water heaters, and leaks that emerge after pipes thaw. While many homeowners associate plumbing damage with extended freezes, even short cold spells can place stress on residential plumbing systems.

In Lowcountry homes, plumbing infrastructure is often designed for mild winters. As a result, sudden overnight freezes can impact exterior plumbing and exposed water lines.

Rooter Man Plumbing based out of West Ashley, SC said that some of the most serious damage is not immediately visible. Leaks and pressure problems frequently surface days later once temperatures rise and pipes begin to expand again.

“One thing we see every winter is that plumbing problems do not always show up during the freeze itself,” said Rooter Man's Owner. “Many issues surface days later, once pipes thaw and pressure returns. That is why early awareness and safe response are so important, especially in a coastal climate where homes are not built for extended cold.”

Rooter Man’s team notes that frozen water lines remain one of the most common winter issues. Improper thawing attempts or delayed response increase the risk of pipe failure. Outdoor or attic placed tankless water heaters are also a frequent concern during cold snaps, as these systems may experience reduced performance or internal damage when exposed to freezing temperatures without adequate protection.

With winter not yet fully behind the region, Charleston’s plumbing experts advise homeowners to remain prepared for the possibility of one or two additional cold spells. Early awareness and simple preventative steps can help reduce the risk of costly repairs caused by a late season freeze.
Preventative measures include insulating exposed pipes, disconnecting hoses, protecting outdoor fixtures, and allowing faucets to drip during freezing nights when appropriate. Plumbers also stress the importance of using safe thawing methods and knowing when professional assistance is necessary. Improper heat sources or open flames can create serious safety hazards and lead to further damage.

Despite the challenges cold weather can bring, many winter plumbing issues are manageable when addressed early and safely. Prompt attention to warning signs such as pressure changes, slow leaks, or unusual system behavior can prevent minor issues from turning into larger repairs.

Rooter Man Plumbing emphasizes preparedness, clear communication, and calm response during cold weather events. By educating homeowners and responding quickly to winter related plumbing concerns, local teams help ensure problems are resolved safely and efficiently. Homeowners experiencing issues related to frozen water lines or other cold weather plumbing concerns are encouraged to seek professional guidance before damage escalates.

Why More Charleston Homeowners Are Choosing Hydro Jetting for Drain Cleaning

Drain Cleaning in Charleston is a popular topic especially during the summer. With older plumbing systems, frequent storms, and tree root intrusion, clogs can build up fast. Hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways to clear stubborn blockages and keep your drains flowing smoothly. Here's why it’s the go-to solution for homeowners across the Lowcountry.

Timing Is Everything

Summer in Charleston doesn't just bring the heat, it also brings hurricane season. Increased rainfall puts extra pressure on your drainage systems especially with no preventative or previous cleaning. If your pipes are already partially blocked, stormwater has nowhere to go, increasing the risk of backups, flooding, and costly damage.

Why Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, roots, sediment, and buildup inside your pipes. It’s far more effective than snaking and is especially useful in older systems where blockages are common.

Common Signs You May Need Jetting:

- Standing water near outdoor drains

- Frequent kitchen or shower clogs

- Slow-draining sinks or tubs

- Bad odors coming from pipes

Jetting Now Can Save You Later

Exposing your drainage systems to some preventative hydro jetting before the rainy season ramps up can protect your home from water damage, save you money on emergency repairs, and extend the life of your drains. Add in the fact that jetting services don't utilize any chemicals and it's an easy decision to make.

Schedule Your Summer Jetting Service Today

If you live in Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, or the surrounding Lowcountry, now’s the time to make sure your drains are ready. Contact Rooter Man Plumbing today at (843)-402-7799 to schedule a hydro jetting service and keep your home flowing smoothly all summer long.

Tired of Recurring Clogs? Here’s Why Water Jetting Works Better Than a Snake

When a drain backs up, most homeowners think about utilizing a drain snake to clear the problem. Snaking your drain can help in the short term, but for stubborn or repeat clogs, it’s often just a temporary fix.

If you’re looking for a more effective, long-lasting solution, it might be time to consider water jetting (also known as hydro jetting). More homeowners and businesses across Charleston are relying on powerful jetting services to keep their plumbing running smoothly, and for good reason.

What Exactly Is Water Jetting?
Water jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, sludge, roots, and debris from inside your pipes. Think of it like a power wash for your drainage system. Jetting safely and thoroughly scours your pipes clean with no chemicals, no digging, and no scraping. Jetting is a safe and effective way for all home and business owners to clear out their clogged systems.

Why Water Jetting is Preferred over a Plumbing Snake
Plumbing snakes are designed to poke a hole through a clog, which is what allows water to start flowing again, but they often leave behind buildup on the pipe walls, meaning the clog isn’t truly gone. Water jetting, on the other hand, completely flushes out years of grime and buildup. After jetting, your pipes flow like new, and you’re far less likely to deal with recurring clogs.

When is Water Jetting the Best Choice?
  • Grease buildup in kitchen drains
  • Tree root intrusion in sewer lines
  • Soap scum and sediment in older plumbing
  • Commercial drain maintenance for restaurants and businesses
  • Recurring or severe main line clogs

Can a Drain Snake Still be Used?
For small household drains or minor clogs, a plumbing snake can do the trick clearing out a drain. The items stuck in these drains causing blockage are not typically built up over long amounts of time, and when the blockage is loose enough or soft enough to dislodge a drain snake works well. Constant and stubborn buildups are best handled by jetting services as it does much better at clearing out and completely removing all forms of blockage.

Pro Tip: For smaller house drains Rooter Man also utilizes what’s called a closet jetter. It’s a smaller hose which works great on kitchen and bathroom drains.

Recapping the Benefits of Water Jetting
  1. A More Powerful Clean. High-pressure water cuts through grease, roots, sediment, and other stubborn blockages.
  2. Long-Lasting Results: A thorough cleaning means fewer clogs down the road.
  3. An Eco-Friendly Solution. No harsh chemicals, just high pressure water.
Stop Fighting the Same Clog Over and Over
If you’re dealing with slow drains, frequent clogs, or just want peace of mind before Charleston’s rainy season, give Rooter Man Plumbing a call. Our professional-grade water jetting equipment clears your pipes quickly, safely, and thoroughly.

5 Plumbing Tips for Charleston Homeowners: Stay Ahead of Costly Repairs

Charleston’s charm comes with its own unique set of plumbing quirks and challenges. From historic homes to coastal storms, Lowcountry living means keeping a close eye on your pipes and drainage systems. Whether you're in Mount Pleasant, West Ashley, or Downtown Charleston, these plumbing tips can help protect your home and wallet.

1. Check for Leaks After Heavy Rain or Flooding

Charleston is no stranger to downpours, king tides, and flash flooding. After major storms, it’s smart to inspect your home for signs of water damage. Even small leaks can lead to mold or structural issues if left untreated for long enough.

Things to look for:

  • Puddles
  • Dripping Pipes
  • Musty Smells

2. Install a Backwater Valve or Prepare with Backflow Testing

If your home is in a flood-prone area like downtown, a backwater valve is a smart investment. This simple device prevents sewage from backing up and re-entering your home during periods of heavy rain. Dealing with a backup is often messy and expensive and because of the heavy rain common this time of year here in Charleston, these backups are much more common than most homeowners realize. If you already have a backwater valve installed you can request backflow testing to ensure that your systems are prepared.

3. Avoid Using Drain Cleaners/Chemicals

While drain cleaners may seem like a quick fix, they’re often too harsh for the older plumbing systems common in many Charleston homes. These chemicals can corrode pipes over time, especially when they sit in the system. Now these chemicals are used on clogged systems which already have restricted water flow. This combination can lead to bigger and more expensive problems down the road because the chemicals take longer to fully drain.

Pro Tip: If you’re dealing with persistent clogs or frequent backups, call a licensed plumber. Hydro jetting could be a safer and extremely effective solution.

4. Test Your Sump Pump Regularly

Water intrusion is always a risk here in Charleston. If your home has a sump pump (especially in crawl spaces) it’s a good idea to test it before the rainy season fully arrives. Pouring water into the pit to make sure it activates and discharges properly. A failed sump pump during a storm could mean serious water damage.

5. Know Where Your Utility Shutoffs Are

Every Charleston homeowner should know the importance of being able to locate the main water and gas shutoffs. In an emergency like a burst pipe or gas leak, being able to shut off utilities quickly can prevent thousands in damage. If you’re not sure where yours are, ask a professional to show you during your next service call.

Pro Tip: Knowing what and where your cleanout cap is as well can help your home’s systems by relieving pressure and allowing proper drainage in the event of flooding or water backup.

Be Prepared Before the Next Storm Arrives!

As we have outlined with this list plumbing issues can escalate quickly especially in climates like Charleston’s. Rooter Man Plumbing is here to help with professional drainage inspections, repairs, and cleaning services.

Plunger 101: How to Pick the Right One and Save Yourself a Service Call

As a plumber serving Charleston and the Lowcountry, I’ve been called out to homes for clogged toilets, slow-draining sinks, and other simple plumbing issues that could have easily been solved with the right plunger.

For homeowners, knowing which plunger to use and when can save you time and money. So, here’s a quick guide on the three most common types of plungers, what they’re best used for, and a few pro tips to keep in mind.

1. Cup Plunger (Sink Plunger)

The classic. It’s a simple rubber cup on a handle, and it's the most common type you’ll find under the kitchen sink. A cup plunger is best for sinks, bathtubs, and showers

Avoid using on:

  • Toilets (the flat rubber cup doesn’t seal well in a toilet’s curved drain)

A cup plunger works best on flat, smooth surfaces. Be sure to submerge the rubber cup in water, as it’s more effective when you’re plunging with water rather than air.

2. Flange Plunger (Toilet Plunger)

This looks a lot like a cup plunger, but it has an additional rubber flap (flange) that folds out from inside the cup. This makes it the ideal tool for toilets. The flange helps create a better seal in the toilet’s curved drain, allowing for better pressure and more effective results.

Pro Tip: If needed, you can use it as a cup plunger in a pinch by folding the flange back in.

3. Accordion Plunger

If you need serious power, this is the one. The accordion plunger has a plastic bellows that provides more pressure with each plunge, making it perfect for stubborn toilet clogs.

Best for:

  • Stubborn toilet clogs

Not ideal for:

  • Sinks or tubs

Tip: If you use this plunger, soften the plastic in warm water first to get a better seal and better results.

How Plungers Work

A plunger uses pressure and suction to dislodge clogs. When you push down, you’re forcing water into the clog. When you pull up, the suction helps break it up. It’s the push-pull motion that clears things up.

Pro Tips

  • Always make sure there’s enough water in the fixture to cover the plunger cup.

  • If you’re using a plunger on a sink, cover the overflow hole with a wet rag to improve suction.

  • Keep a cup plunger for sinks and a flange plunger for toilets.

  • Use a steady, consistent rhythm when plunging — it’s more effective than simply jabbing.

At Rooter-Man SC, we love solving plumbing problems, but our goal is to help you feel confident tackling these smaller issues yourself. With the right plunger and a little knowledge, you can handle a lot of common clogs on your own. If you get stuck, though, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’ve got you covered!

Drain Cleaning Services in Summerville SC

When it comes to the home plumbing systems, a clogged drain can be frustrating

A drain that becomes clogged can cause a disruption in our daily tasks, whether it is the inability to flush a toilet, drain a sink, or have bath or shower, because the water will not drain from the bathtub. However, there are many things that people can do to reduce the chances of developing a clogged drain. One thing people can do is keep items that can cause clogs out of the drains.

Below are some normal household items that can lead to clogged drains:

  • Toilets: When the wrong items are flushed down the toilet, it can very easily clog the toilet drain system. Items that can clog a toilet include: paper towels, cigarette butts, sanitary napkins, grease, oil, too much toilet paper flushed at one time, and kitty litter. It is important only use the toilet for its intended purpose. As well, a bacterial additive added to the system will help ensure waste is digested in the septic tank.
  • Kitchen Sink Drains: Common items that can clog a kitchen sink drain include: dish detergent, food waste such as potato peelings and fruit peelings, chicken bones, vegetable pieces such as carrot ends, grease, cooking oil, fat from cooked meat and chicken, and other food debris. It is important to keep food items out of the drain to avoid the development of a clog. You should also regularly clean the drain using a homemade mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the drain and then run hot water through the drain system to prevent the accumulation of debris in the pipes.
  • Bath/Shower Drains: Bath/shower drains can easily become clogged if not properly cleaned and maintained. Such items that can clog a bath drain include: cleaning agents, hair, soap, and shampoo. It is important to practice the same drain cleaning practices as you would with a sink. After a shower or bath, run hot water through drain to make sure everything has been pushed through the plumbing system.
  • Bathroom Sink Drain: Items that can clog a bathroom sink include: toothpaste, soap, hair, and items that have fallen into the sink such as jewelry or lipstick. It is important to be careful when standing above the sink and looking into the mirror. You should also clean the drains like you do for the kitchen sinks.

Clogged or slow draining sinks can be very annoying, however, taking the appropriate measures to maintain a clean and clear drain will go a long way in preventing a clog. It is important to keep items that can cause a clog out of the drain system. Getting a thorough plumbing inspection each year will help keep your plumbing system in top working order. It is important to contact a plumber if you develop a clog that you are unable to clear because plumbers have the education, training, and experience to find the clog and effectively clear it before damage results. For drain cleaning and plumbing services call Rooter-man of Summerville, SC at: (843) 766-3311.

Revitalize Your Pipes with Hydro Jetting: The Ultimate Solution to Clogged Drains

Is your sewer system struggling to drain properly? Over time, pipes can become clogged with waste, grease, debris, and even invasive tree roots. When this happens, water and waste have trouble flowing, leading to backups, unpleasant odors, and potential damage to your plumbing system, but there’s a powerful solution that can restore your pipes to their original condition – hydro jetting.

Hydro jetting, also known as pipe jetting, is a highly effective service that uses strong blasts of water to clear away blockages and debris, helping to restore your pipes to their optimal condition. Here’s how the process works:

How Hydro Jetting Works:

  1. Inspection: A plumbing technician uses a sewer camera to inspect the pipes and locate the exact source of the blockage.

  2. High-Pressure Blasting: Once the blockage is located, a high-pressure jetting device is inserted into the pipes. The powerful water jets break up and wash away all debris, sludge, grease, and even tree roots that are causing the clog.

  3. Restoring Flow: The water flow is restored, and the pipes are left clean, smooth, and clear of any obstructions, ensuring water and waste flow freely.

Why Hydro Jetting?

  • Fast and Effective: Hydro jetting quickly clears tough clogs without causing damage to pipes.

  • Cost-Effective: A one-time solution that prevents future costly repairs.

  • Eco-Friendly: Uses only water, making it a safe and environmentally-friendly option.

Hydro jetting is the go-to method for clearing out years of accumulated debris and restoring the functionality of your plumbing system.
