Why Backflow Testing is Required in Charleston

If you own a home or commercial property in Charleston, you’ve likely heard the term backflow testing, but do you know why it’s required? Whether you're new to plumbing regulations or just need a reminder, understanding why backflow prevention is essential for keeping your water safe, staying compliant, and avoiding costly penalties.

At Rooter Man Plumbing, we specialize in backflow testing in Charleston and provide certified inspection reports to ensure your system meets all local and state requirements.

What Is Backflow, and What Are The Dangers?

Backflow happens when water flows in the opposite direction than intended, pulling contaminated water from toilets, irrigation systems, or industrial equipment into your clean water supply. This can pose serious health hazards, including exposure to chemicals, bacteria, or other pollutants through what should be your clean water supply. Without proper backflow prevention devices and routine testing, your property could become a risk to the public water supply.

Charleston’s Backflow Testing Requirements

Charleston and the surrounding Lowcountry areas follow strict regulations for backflow testing. According to the official Charleston Water System Backflow Prevention page, annual testing is required for:

  • Residential irrigation systems
  • Commercial properties with fire suppression systems
  • Multifamily housing units
  • Industrial and medical facilities
  • Restaurants and food service providers

These tests must be conducted by a certified backflow tester Charleston trusts, like the licensed professionals at Rooter Man Plumbing, and results must be submitted to the city each year to remain in compliance.

What Happens If You Ignore Annual Testing?

Failing to test your backflow before the city's deadline can lead to; Water service disconnection, fines and penalties from the Charleston Water System, risk of unsafe drinking water for you and your neighbors, and even legal liability in the event of contamination.

Dealing With a Leaky Outdoor Faucet? Charleston Repair Tips

Your hose bib, also known as an outdoor faucet or spigot, may not seem like a big deal, but when it leaks or freezes, it can cause major plumbing problems and unexpected repair bills. In this post we will break down why this small portion of your home's plumbing system matters more than you would think.

Why Your Hose Bib Matters

This small fixture connects your home’s water supply to your garden hose. It’s used year-round for everything from watering plants to washing cars, but when a hose bib leaks, even slowly, it can; waste water, damage your siding or foundation, freeze and crack the pipe, and or cause mold or rot behind walls. Hose bib repairs are easily avoidable if you know what to watch out for.

What Should You Watch For?

If you see dripping water, a loose handle, or moisture around the faucet when it’s turned off, it’s time for a repair. Minor problems like worn washers can often be fixed quickly, but hidden leaks, corrosion, or freeze damage usually call for a pro.

Pro Tip: For safe and efficient repairs, trust Rooter Man’s outdoor faucet services in the Charleston area.

When to Call a Plumber

DIY repairs are fine if you’re handy and capable, but when the leak is inside the wall or connected to copper pipe, a professional plumber can properly diagnose and repair the problem, reducing potential damage from leaks. If drywall or siding needs to be removed, your plumber will explain the repair options and walk you through the next steps.

How to Prevent Hose Bib Issues

  • Inspect your hose bib every spring
  • Disconnect hoses before cold weather
  • Add an insulated cover during freezes
  • Upgrade to a frost-proof hose bib

Why More Charleston Homeowners Are Choosing Hydro Jetting for Drain Cleaning

Drain Cleaning in Charleston is a popular topic especially during the summer. With older plumbing systems, frequent storms, and tree root intrusion, clogs can build up fast. Hydro jetting is one of the most effective ways to clear stubborn blockages and keep your drains flowing smoothly. Here's why it’s the go-to solution for homeowners across the Lowcountry.

Timing Is Everything

Summer in Charleston doesn't just bring the heat, it also brings hurricane season. Increased rainfall puts extra pressure on your drainage systems especially with no preventative or previous cleaning. If your pipes are already partially blocked, stormwater has nowhere to go, increasing the risk of backups, flooding, and costly damage.

Why Hydro Jetting?

Hydro jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, roots, sediment, and buildup inside your pipes. It’s far more effective than snaking and is especially useful in older systems where blockages are common.

Common Signs You May Need Jetting:

- Standing water near outdoor drains

- Frequent kitchen or shower clogs

- Slow-draining sinks or tubs

- Bad odors coming from pipes

Jetting Now Can Save You Later

Exposing your drainage systems to some preventative hydro jetting before the rainy season ramps up can protect your home from water damage, save you money on emergency repairs, and extend the life of your drains. Add in the fact that jetting services don't utilize any chemicals and it's an easy decision to make.

Schedule Your Summer Jetting Service Today

If you live in Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, or the surrounding Lowcountry, now’s the time to make sure your drains are ready. Contact Rooter Man Plumbing today at (843)-402-7799 to schedule a hydro jetting service and keep your home flowing smoothly all summer long.

Keep Your Water Heater Running Strong: Plumbing Tips for Charleston Homeowners

If you own a water heater in Charleston, regular maintenance isn’t just a good idea… it's essential. With proper care, your unit can last over a decade while running safely and efficiently. When left alone for years you could be facing unexpected breakdowns, higher utility bills, or even dangerous gas leaks.

At Rooter Man Plumbing, we help Lowcountry homeowners protect their hot water systems with affordable, professional water heater maintenance.

Why Water Heater Maintenance Matters

Water heaters work hard every day to deliver hot water to your home, but over time, sediment builds up inside the tank, components wear down, and burners become less efficient. Without routine care, you might notice:
  • Water that doesn’t heat properly
  • Strange smells from the hot water
  • Loud popping or banging noises
  • Higher-than-usual gas, electric, or water bills
  • Pilot light issues or frequent shut-offs
Pro Tip: Annual maintenance, especially if your home has hard water or your heater is over 5 years old can help ensure that you are getting the most out of your heater, and maximize the lifetime of your system.

Proactive Care Means Fewer Costly Repairs

Staying ahead of problems with routine maintenance can save you hundreds in emergency repair costs. It also ensures your water heater runs as efficiently as possible, which can end up saving you money month after month. If your water heater is nearing the end of its lifespan, our technicians will help you plan ahead, offering expert advice on water heater replacement options.

Pro Tip: If you have a gas water heater in your attic, your system might benefit from having a temperature controlled fan installed. We were featured in a press release detailing How Summer Heat is Knocking Out Attic Gas Water Heaters.

Tired of Recurring Clogs? Here’s Why Water Jetting Works Better Than a Snake

When a drain backs up, most homeowners think about utilizing a drain snake to clear the problem. Snaking your drain can help in the short term, but for stubborn or repeat clogs, it’s often just a temporary fix.

If you’re looking for a more effective, long-lasting solution, it might be time to consider water jetting (also known as hydro jetting). More homeowners and businesses across Charleston are relying on powerful jetting services to keep their plumbing running smoothly, and for good reason.

What Exactly Is Water Jetting?
Water jetting uses high-pressure water to blast away grease, sludge, roots, and debris from inside your pipes. Think of it like a power wash for your drainage system. Jetting safely and thoroughly scours your pipes clean with no chemicals, no digging, and no scraping. Jetting is a safe and effective way for all home and business owners to clear out their clogged systems.

Why Water Jetting is Preferred over a Plumbing Snake
Plumbing snakes are designed to poke a hole through a clog, which is what allows water to start flowing again, but they often leave behind buildup on the pipe walls, meaning the clog isn’t truly gone. Water jetting, on the other hand, completely flushes out years of grime and buildup. After jetting, your pipes flow like new, and you’re far less likely to deal with recurring clogs.

When is Water Jetting the Best Choice?
  • Grease buildup in kitchen drains
  • Tree root intrusion in sewer lines
  • Soap scum and sediment in older plumbing
  • Commercial drain maintenance for restaurants and businesses
  • Recurring or severe main line clogs

Can a Drain Snake Still be Used?
For small household drains or minor clogs, a plumbing snake can do the trick clearing out a drain. The items stuck in these drains causing blockage are not typically built up over long amounts of time, and when the blockage is loose enough or soft enough to dislodge a drain snake works well. Constant and stubborn buildups are best handled by jetting services as it does much better at clearing out and completely removing all forms of blockage.

Pro Tip: For smaller house drains Rooter Man also utilizes what’s called a closet jetter. It’s a smaller hose which works great on kitchen and bathroom drains.

Recapping the Benefits of Water Jetting
  1. A More Powerful Clean. High-pressure water cuts through grease, roots, sediment, and other stubborn blockages.
  2. Long-Lasting Results: A thorough cleaning means fewer clogs down the road.
  3. An Eco-Friendly Solution. No harsh chemicals, just high pressure water.
Stop Fighting the Same Clog Over and Over
If you’re dealing with slow drains, frequent clogs, or just want peace of mind before Charleston’s rainy season, give Rooter Man Plumbing a call. Our professional-grade water jetting equipment clears your pipes quickly, safely, and thoroughly.

No Hot Water? Here’s What to Do If Your Water Heater Stops Working in Charleston

There’s nothing worse than jumping into a shower and getting hit with ice-cold water. If your water heater has suddenly stopped working, don’t panic. Whether you’ve got a gas or electric unit, there are a few things you can check before going to google to search for plumbers near me.

1. Double-Check the Obvious First

Sometimes the problem is simpler than it seems. For electric water heaters, make sure the breaker hasn’t tripped. Flip it off and back on if needed. For gas water heaters, check to see if the pilot light is out. If it is, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to relight it if you feel comfortable doing so.

Also, you might want to confirm that no one in the house recently used up all the hot water. It sounds silly, but this happens more than you would think, especially in busy homes with higher water usage.

2. Second, Listen for Strange Noises

Is your tank making banging, popping, or rumbling sounds? That can be a sign of sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank. Over time, this can reduce heating efficiency and even damage your unit. If this is happening, a professional flush might solve the issue or if your unit is old enough, and hasn’t been flushed, you may be looking at a replacement.

Pro Tip: Flushing your water heater once a year especially if you have a tankless model like this one on the right. Flushing your water heater helps prevent sediment buildup and keeps it running efficiently. In fact, some warranties actually require annual flushing and may be voided without it, so it’s worth checking your unit’s manual.

3. Check for Leaks Around the Tank

If you spot water pooling around the base of your water heater, turn off the water supply valve and call a local plumber right away. Leaks can lead to major water damage fast.

Some water on the ground might just be condensation, but if it’s a large pool, consistent leaking, or the tank is rusting then don’t wait.

4. Smell Something Off?

If you have a gas water heater and notice a rotten egg smell, that could be a gas leak. Don’t try to fix it yourself, shut off your main gas line if you know where it is located and evacuate your home. Once you’re outside, call the gas company immediately to report the leak.

5. Look at the Age of the Heater

Water heaters don’t last forever. Most have a lifespan of 8-12 years, depending on the brand, type, and maintenance. If yours is pushing that age and giving you trouble, replacement may be more cost-effective than repair.

When Should You Call a Pro?

If your DIY checks don’t solve the issue or you’re unsure about anything then give your local plumber a call. At Rooter Man, we’re experienced in diagnosing, repairing, and replacing all types of water heaters, including tankless and traditional units. In June we responded to a water heater call and tried to reignite the burner in the photo below. Sadly we were unable to do so, and ended up replacing the unit, but you can count on us to repair first, and replace second.

Charleston Hurricane Season Prep: Don’t Forget About Your Main Utility Shutoffs

When hurricane season rolls around, most of us double-check our emergency kits, make sure we’ve got plenty of water and batteries, and look up our evacuation zones. Now those are all very important, but one thing many homeowners forget to do? Locate and shut off utilities. Today we are going to share reasons why shutting off your main utilities is an important step in hurricane preparedness.

Know Where Your Main Water Shutoff Valve Is

If high winds or flooding damage your plumbing, you could end up with a broken pipe or major leak even after the storm has passed in some cases. That’s why knowing how to shut off your home’s water supply is so important.

Where can you find your main shutoffs?

   - Near the water heater

   - Where the water line enters your home

   - Inside a ground-level utility box near the curb

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider replacing it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Find Your Gas Shutoff Valve

Storm damage can also lead to dangerous gas leaks. Strong winds or flooding may loosen gas connections without you realizing it. If you don’t already know where your gas shutoff is located, now’s the time to find it. Start by looking for your gas meter on the outside of your home or along your property line. Keep a gas shutoff wrench or tool nearby, and learn how to use it before you need it.

Pro Tip: If the valve is rusty or hard to turn, it might not work when you need it most. Consider calling your local plumbers, and replace it if it looks worn out before any storms arrive.

Locate Your Sewer Cleanout Cap

Here’s one many people overlook: the sewer cleanout cap. It’s a capped pipe that sticks out of the ground, usually white or black, and can often be found near your foundation, in a garden bed, or along the property line. During a hurricane, heavy rainfall and flooding can overwhelm sewer lines. That can cause backups into your home’s drains, toilets, and tubs.

Pro Tip: If water starts backing up, knowing where your cleanout is located allows a plumber to release the pressure quickly, or block incoming flow if needed.

Evacuating? Take a Few Minutes to Shut It All Down.

   - Main water valve

   - Gas supply

   - Check your sewer cleanout cap

These steps only take a few minutes but could save your home from major damage if utilities fail or lines break while you're away.

Quick Recap

Getting familiar with your home’s water, gas, and sewer systems may not be the first thing you think of when prepping for a storm, but it should be on your list. A little preparation now can help you avoid major problems later.
