Why Is My Plumbing Making That Noise? A Real-Life Fix from Charleston

Recently, we were called to a home in Charleston to solve a strange and persistent noise coming from the plumbing. The homeowner said it happened every time the toilet was flushed, but the source wasn’t obvious. After a little detective work, we discovered the issue wasn’t even inside the house. The culprit? A faulty vacuum breaker on an outdoor hose bib. It was causing vibration and noise throughout the plumbing system whenever water was used inside. Once we removed the bad vacuum breaker, the noise vanished.

While that was a less-common issue, noisy plumbing is a complaint we hear all the time, and it can stem from a variety of causes.

Common Reasons Plumbing Makes Noise

  • Water Hammer: A loud banging or thudding sound caused when water suddenly stops or changes direction. This often happens when valves close quickly.

  • High Water Pressure: Excess pressure can make pipes rattle or whine.

  • Loose Pipes: Pipes that aren’t properly secured may knock against framing when water flows through.

  • Worn Out Washers: If you hear a screech or whine when turning on a faucet, it might be a worn washer inside the fixture.

  • Air in the Pipes: This can create bubbling or gurgling noises, especially when turning on taps or flushing toilets.

Simple Steps to Investigate or Reduce Plumbing Noise

  • Identify when the noise happens – Does it occur with a specific fixture or during certain times of the day?

  • Check for visible leaks or drips – Especially around outdoor spigots, toilets, or under sinks.

  • Inspect hose bibs and vacuum breakers – As we saw in Charleston, these outdoor components can cause indoor noise.

  • Lower water pressure – You can test your home’s pressure with a gauge and adjust it at the pressure regulator if it’s too high.

  • Secure loose pipes – Especially in basements or crawlspaces, where they’re often visible and accessible.

If you’ve tried the basics and still can’t pin down the source, it might be time to bring in a pro.

Plumbing noises are often harmless—but they can also be early signs of bigger issues.
